Although toning may seem to be a New Age thing, it has been used for promoting wellness in many cultures around the world, including Indigenous tribes, Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and many of the Mystery Schools. We are now at an exciting time when much of this knowledge is re-emerging, and many scientists are studying it's effects, which is bridging the gap between science and metaphysics. Below is a list of a few of the many benefits of toning that research has discovered:
- Increased oxygen in the cells
- Lowered blood pressure and heart rate
- Increased lymphatic circulation
- Increased levels of melatonin
- Reduced levels of stress related hormones
- Release of endorphins—self-created opiates that work as “natural pain relievers”.
- Boosted production of interleukin-l, a protein associated with blood production
- Increased levels of nitric oxide, (NO), a molecule associated with promotion of healing and with vascular dilation.
- Release of oxytocin, the “trust” hormone
I have been using vocal toning while facilitating group meditations for a few years, and participants have shared with me that they find it very relaxing, that it sets a "tone" for the their meditation session, that it provides a deeper connection with their body, and that it empowers some to be more confident about using their voice, not only during the toning session, but in their day to day life.
Please note that by including these findings, I certainly don't intend to limit the possibilities of what toning can offer. I'm sure that if one opens themselves to the limitless possibilities, and holds focused intentions while toning, that the energies can do so much more. Each of you can be the judge of that :)
Here I will like to share with you the way that I tone, so that you can try this for yourself if you wish. To do so, sit or lay down comfortably, preferably with your spine as straight as possible. Begin with a few deep breaths. To tone, inhale deeply, and then create the sound as you exhale, while you hold your attention on the corresponding area of your spine. Here's the sequence I use:
Chakra (area on spine): Sound:
1. Root chakra (tailbone) UH
2. Sacral chakra (navel) OO
3. Solar Plexus chakra (below chest) OH
4. Heart chakra (middle of chest) AH
5. Throat chakra (throat) EYE
6. 3rd eye chakra (above eye brow) AYE
7. Crown chakra (top of head) EE
Play around with these sounds and find the ways that feel best for you. You can always choose to do only one sound if you feel to, in which case, I would suggest any of the first four, as they are generally more relaxing (particularly the heart chakra).
In my experience, toning with a group of people can certainly offer more power to the experience. But having said that, many times that I tone on my own I have experienced profound effects. You can join us in our weekly sound energy sessions to share in the group energy, or play around with the tones on your own time. What's also nice about toning, is that we can do it anytime, anywhere, because we always have our voice with us.
Please feel free to share your experiences, and have fun :)
